Mrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner

This was my very first ARC (thank you Net Galley and Atria Books!) and all I can say is WOW! I absolutely loved Mrs. Everything. I read it at night. I read it during lunch. I read it at stoplights on the way to and from work. I could not put it down!

Mrs. Everything is described as an ambitious work by author Jennifer Weiner, but I would say “ambitious” is an understatement. The story of sisters Bethie and Jo Kaufman spans from childhood through adulthood as both women face an incredible amount of issues including homosexuality, abuse, addiction, racism, sexism, death and betrayal. Given the breadth of issues and span of the story, Mrs. Everything could easily have become a mess of a story that races through key plot elements and details, but it is a testament to Weiner for covering so much in such a large span of time that is still detailed and affecting.

The coming of age stories of these two women are both beautiful and heartbreaking. As their stories unfold, Jennifer Weiner doesn’t gloss over the social events of the time. Instead, she honestly and sometimes painfully writes about how the issues of the day affected each of the women and how they did (or didn’t) overcome the obstacles placed in front of them.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, once I started Mrs. Everything, I could not put it down! I was immediately pulled into the story of the Kaufman sisters and I immediately felt for both of them. I think what's so great (but also unfortunate) about Mrs. Everything, is that there is at least one part of Bethie and Jo's life that any woman can connect to, probably more. Weiner does such an amazing job describing the events that occurred in the sisters' lives that I found myself hurting for these women and completely understanding instead of judging their means of self-medicating.

Mrs. Everything is easily one of my favorite books I've read this year so far. The story of the Kaufman sisters is so specific, yet so universal. I can't recommend this book enough.

Rating: 5 out of 5 (!!!)
