The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

The Wife Between Us is a gripping thriller that still manages to be surprising in a sea of popular suspense novels.

Given that the majority of my #TBR stack last month was made up of thrillers, I decided to make it my mission to focus on this specific genre. In many ways this was a huge fail. Not because I didn't get through many books, but because it became harder and harder for the next book to actually thrill me. But the great thing about this plan was that when a book did surprise me - especially as the month wore on and the number of thrillers read at a time went up - I knew it must be really great. The Wife Between Us was one of those books.

The Wife Between Us is about a woman who will do anything to stop her ex-husband from marrying another woman. After reading that, you may assume this is the story of a jealous ex who just wants her husband back. But what makes this surprising is why she wants to interfere in her husband's new relationship, and even more surprising is the way in which her ex began his relationship with his new fiance.

I can't say too much more without giving away spoilers (in fact, I already felt like I said too much), but there were two things that made this novel great. One, despite the length, The Wife Between Us did not drag on. It keeps you guessing, but the pacing has the perfect balance of leaving you in the dark just enough to keep reading, while giving you enough light to feel satisfied. And just when you're met with one twist, Hendricks and Pekkanen throw another one at you making this novel a lot of fun. The second thing I really loved about this book was its honest critique of marriage. While the relationships described in the book aren't typical, they address the need for independence and autonomy that I think a lot of women struggle with when they get married. It also gives some insight on what life may be like for someone who seems to be living the fairytale.

The Wife Between Us is so addictive; I couldn't put it down. It's also one of those rare books that truly lives up to the hype.
